2026 Color Trends

2026 is shaping up to be an unforgettable year. The Winter Olympics kicked off in February, the FIFA World Cup arrives this summer, and the United States will celebrate its 250th anniversary. NASA is even planning its first crewed mission in more than 50 years, with a flyby of the Moon on the horizon.

In the paint industry, another trip around the sun also brings a fresh wave of Colors of the Year. While these selections often signal broader design trends, what’s “in” can look very different depending on who you ask. Some companies focus on timeless shades that pair effortlessly with today’s lifestyles, while others lean into expressive hues meant to spark curiosity or emotion.

Together, these perspectives tell a larger story about where color is headed in 2026 and why it matters.

Benjamin Moore: Influence, Intention, and Warmth

Influencers may spark interest, but they’re only part of the color conversation. Mindy Murphy, Vice President of Customer Segmentation Marketing at Benjamin Moore, notes that while customers often arrive informed by online research, the in store experience remains critical to final decision making. Inspiration comes from everywhere: social media, magazines, television, and even thoughtfully designed commercial spaces.

When it comes to color, Benjamin Moore sees warmth returning in a big way. Hannah Yeo, Senior Manager of Color Marketing, says browns are stepping forward as inviting alternatives to black and gray. From deep chocolates to soft caramels, these hues are also warming surrounding colors. Reds, oranges, and earthy accents give off a richer, more organic feel.

That evolution culminates in Silhouette (AF 655), Benjamin Moore’s 2026 Color of the Year. Building on the success of 2025’s Cinnamon Slate, Silhouette reflects a growing appetite for nuanced, sophisticated hues. Paired with complementary shades like Batik (AF 610), the palette balances depth, comfort, and refinement. Yeo emphasizes that these trends aren’t dictated, they’re observed, curated, and refined to work in real homes with real furnishings.

Pantone: Calm as a Foundation

Pantone’s lens spans industries, from fashion to automotive, making its Color of the Year a reliable indicator of broader cultural shifts. For 2026, the message is clear: color is calming down.

Pantone’s Color of the Year, Cloud Dancer (Pantone 11 4201), is an airy, true neutral that reflects a collective desire for simplicity, clarity, and adaptability. Laurie Pressman, Vice President of the

Pantone Color Institute, explains that the focus isn’t on louder hues, but on foundational neutrals that create longevity and ease. Cloud Dancer acts as a flexible backdrop, allowing textures, finishes, and accent colors to stand out without overwhelming a space.

Its versatility gives it staying power and makes it easier for customers to build accent palettes around a trusted neutral. While social media may spark short term inspiration, Pantone reinforces the bigger picture: consumers gravitate toward spaces that feel balanced, intentional, and timeless.

Valspar: Nature as the New Neutral

Even within trending colors, the most popular shades evolve. According to Valspar color expert Sue Kim, green is leading that evolution in 2026.

What’s most surprising is how quickly green has shifted from accent to everyday essential. Warm, mid tone greens like Warm Eucalyptus, Sprig of Sage, and Green Trellis are replacing gray as a new neutral, appearing across full rooms and entire homes. These hues reflect a desire for calm, wellness, and emotional comfort.

Blues are evolving as well, moving darker and more atmospheric. Shades like Encore and Nightfall appeal to homeowners seeking moodier colors that still feel timeless. Kim notes that consumers respond best to inspiration they can visualize colors shown in real spaces, paired with natural materials, rather than trends presented in isolation. Valspar’s 2026 forecast focuses on longevity, authenticity, and designs that feel grounded and enduring.

A Designer’s Perspective: Balance Above All

For color consultant Kristin Summer, owner of Colors With Kristin, the trends of 2026 aren’t surprising, they’re a reflection of the current cultural mood. Richer, more saturated colors are gaining traction across paint, design, and fashion, driven by a desire for confidence, optimism, and clarity. These hues cut through visual noise and feel energizing, an influence she partially attributes to Gen Z.

That shift has softened the dominance of minimalist neutrals, though they’re far from disappearing. Summer believes the most successful spaces balance bold colors with softer tones or neutrals to keep designs intentional rather than overwhelming.

Ultimately, Summer stresses that trends should never override personal connection. Color choices should support how people want to feel in their spaces, not what influencers or forecasts suggest. Color, she reminds us, is one of the most powerful and subconscious elements of a room, shaping experience long before it’s consciously noticed.

Richard’s Paint: Color as Cultural Reflection

If customers ever wonder where color trends come from or why a Color of the Year isn’t their personal favorite, the answer is simpler than it seems: they helped create it. Designers and color forecasters observe how people live, decorate, and respond to their environments, often over several years, then translate those patterns into color direction.

Ron Hutton, Director of Marketing at Richard’s Paint, says 2026 marks a shift away from sterile whites toward warmer, architectural neutrals that emphasize texture and depth. Blues are becoming more grounded, reds more earthy, and the overall palette leans toward calm, comfort, and livable luxury rather than bold statements.

According to Hutton, this isn’t trend setting by decree it’s a natural response to a hectic decade. Paint companies aren’t forcing palettes; they’re curating emotional cues into cohesive color stories. Lean into inspiration and storytelling; it’ll help you feel more confident in your color choices that will still feel right long after the trend moves on.

Florida Paints: Color from Memory

Florida Paints, based near Orlando and engineered for the state’s demanding climate, approached 2026 from a more introspective angle. Instead of looking outward to trends, they looked inward, to memory. Their guiding question: What color feels like home?

That reflection led to Grape Soda and White Pepper, Florida Paints’ 2026 Colors of the Year. Rooted in nostalgia and comfort, the pair feels both timeless and current. Grape Soda brings warmth and personality, while White Pepper offers a soft, creamy neutral that grounds a space and lets other colors shine. Together, they invite homeowners to reconnect with familiar, comforting environments, proof that the most powerful color inspiration often comes from memory, not the moment.
